diy bird house

You will need a saw and someone able to cut wood for this project. A DIY bird house is a fun project for the whole family and everyone will enjoy watching the birds feed in the house after it is done.

Below are the steps to build a DIY bird house.

  • 10 x 7 Back
  • 5 x 6 Front
  • (2) 6.5 x 6.5 Sides
  • 6 x 6 Bottom
  • 7 x 7 Top
  • Nail Gun
  • Nails
  • Hinge
  • Drill
  • Screws
  • Clamp

Find cedar wood and cut the pieces out from the dimensions provided above. You will need a table saw to cut the wood in the correct dimensions. Then you need a hole saw to drill a hole through the front piece of wood for entryway to house for the birds.

Then nail the sides pieces to the front piece of the house with a nail gun and slide the back piece in and nail the side pieces to the back. You will need a clamp to hold the pieces tight together so the boards do not move before the nail attaches them.

You should use three nails per piece of board. This should hold the boards firmly in place for the lifetime of the bird house.

Then you should attach the roof using the hinge. This will allow you to open the bird house to clean it and add more bird seed.

Drill holes on the roof and on the top of the back piece. Then use a screwdriver and screws to tighten the hinge onto the bird house.

Now the bird house should be assembled except for the front bar below the entry hole. Drill another hole in the front a little smaller than the diameter of the bar. Then pound the bar into the hole for a firm place for birds to rest on the bird house.

You can now hang nail the bird house to the front of a tree in yard somewhere in the view of a window in your home. Just hammer a nail through the back board of the bird house. Then you can watch the birds enjoy your DIY bird house.

Finches are one common bird that loves bird houses. Here is a full list.
