DIY Cloth Napkins

cloth napkin

You will want to pair DIY cloth napkins with your DIY tablecloth from our last post. Pairing napkins with a tablecloth is very classy and the sign of a great host and entertainer.

In this post, we will provide instructions on how to sew complementary cloth napkins for a beautiful table for your home.

This is a good project for beginner sewers. You will learn how to sew double-sided and mider corners too. These techniques can then be used on several other future sewing projects for your home.

WHAT YOU NEED:

  • Front Fabric
  • Back Fabric
  • Thread
  • Ruler
  • Sewing Gauge
  • Fabric Marker
  • Scissors
  • Pins
  • Sewing Machine
  • Iron

STEPS

You should first prewash your fabrics before you begin the project. You want the fabric to be clean and in good condition before you start to cut and sew the fabric.

Use your ruler and fabric marker to mark a 18×18 square pattern on the front fabric with an extra 1-in. for the mider corner and edge folds. We recommend a 21×21 inch square for extra fabric to work with.

Then measure the back fabric ½-inch smaller than the front. This means you would want 17.5×17.5 inches for the back fabric.

Fold the fabric over ¼ inch and press it with an iron. Then folder it over how wide you want the border of the napkin to be and iron it again. Repeat these steps on all corners of the fabric.

Fold the corner in half diagonally with the wrong side of the fabric facing out. Pin it together and repeat the steps on all four corners. Then mark down the creased line and sew. Then cut off the excess fabric from the corner. You should now have a mider corner.

DIY Tablecloth

Let’s start with an easy DIY project for our first post.

This DIY craft project does require that you know how to sew either with a machine or with hand sewing needles. If you know how to sew, you will be able to create your very own DIY tablecloth for your home.

MAKE YOUR OWN TABLECLOTH

The first thing to do is to choose a fabric. You want to consider color, pattern and the fabric. The fabric should be something you can wash in your washing machine since food and liquid will get on the fabric.

You can purchase fabric at a design store or craft store for very cheap. Keep an eye out for fabric on sale or remnants that fit your measurements. You can save money this way.

Then you need to measure the table to determine the size of fabric you will need. You might need to cut out side panels for the tablecloth too. You want the overhang measurements to be the same around the entire table.

You need to decide how far you want the tablecloth to overhang. For an informal cut, let the tablecloth hang 1 ft. over the sides of the table. For something more formal, cut the tablecloth to hang 1 inch. from the floor below. This is your preference.

If the tablecloth doesn’t need panels, the only sewing that needs to be done is a hem around the bottom of the tablecloth. We recommend a ½” double rolled hem for most DIY tablecloths.

If the tablecloth needs side panels, you will need to sew the side panels to the center panel before you sew the hem at the bottom. If the tablecloth does require side panels, we recommend you choose a patterned tablecloth as it will then be able to hide the seams for the panels.

A well-made DIY tablecloth can last several years and is also a good conversation piece for dinner party or holiday guests. You will find that once you have made one tablecloth you will be able to easily make others for different seasons and different occasions throughout the year.
